That Podcast 11: The Second Time Around (AAC)

November 21, 2010 22:17:17.414

That Podcast: FNV Diary

Welcome to episode 11 of "That Podcast: An FNV Diary" - a podcast where Michael Lucas-Smith and I document our trials and tribulations in Fallout: New Vegas.

On today's podcast, Makalua and I talk about our more careful followup playthroughs, where we've tried to explore the entire map and push the plot back until the end. Michael isn't on this cast - he's on a work trip to Europe. We also discovered another Fallout oriented podcast - The GNR podcast. I've subscribed in iTunes, you should too :).

You can subscribe in iTunes (or any podcatcher) using this feed, or this one for the AAC edition. You can get to the podcast directly in iTunes via this link. You can also go to the iTunes store and leave a comment, or join the Facebook Group and discuss the podcast.

If you want to download the podcast directly, I've provided it in three formats:

Got feedback? Send it to James. We'd really appreciate it if you head on over to iTunes and leave a comment - enjoy the podcast, and we'll see you in the wastelands!

Copyright Rules Gone Mad

November 19, 2010 9:56:42.447

The latest stupidity in the ongoing copyright wars is the COICA - a proposed law (just got through the Senate Judiciary Committee) that would give the Attorney General the ability to censor websites based on his office "deeming them to be primarily for infringing activity". Well. I'm sure that a lot of the activity in DropBox qualifies; on the other hand, DropBox is a really cool service for easily passing documents around. Would that be something that got shuttered? Who knows?

And what about the possible political impact? It's not a stretch to imagine a politically oriented White House (insert whichever political persuasion you fear most here) deciding to shutter an opposing set of websites based on some infringing material that landed there via end user upload. The number of ways that this sort of thing could be abused simply boggles the mind.

It's time to completely rethink copyright law. What we have now isn't working, and attempting to tighten the screws - while simultaneously extending the timespan of content owner monopolies - isn't the best way forward.

Getting Ready for a Training Class

November 19, 2010 7:18:17.661

I have an old Mac Mini (it's got a g4 processor, that's how old) - and it's hooked up to a VGA LCD monitor I bought a few years ago to replace a ginormous CRT it was using. I'm teaching an intro to Smalltalk class via webcast in a couple of weeks, and I figured the monitor would be useful for that - I can keep the slides I'm displaying on the exported view, and a window with the class chat room on the second display. Sounds reasonable, and a quick test (now that I've bought a new mini-display port to VGA adaptor) shows that it works fine.

It should be to teach an intro class again - it's been years since I did that regularly (going all the way back to the ParcPlace days for me). In the interim I've been doing a whole lot of screencast tutorials, so it's not as if I'm out of practice or anything :)

Interested in signing up? Sign up over at Dave Buck's site - while I'll be presenting the course it's material Dave has put together and delivered in person many times.

What Value in the Firehose?

November 18, 2010 16:27:37.000

I see that Twitter has found a revenue model - selling access to the firehose:

And then there’s Twitter, which jealously guards access to its full stream of tweets (roughly 1,000 per second, these days). As of now, however, it’s signed a deal with Gnip whereby you can get a randomly-selected 50% of those tweets for $360,000 a year, which works out at $30,000 a month. You’re not allowed to republish them, but that’s OK—the people willing to spend that kind of money are likely to be high-frequency trading shops who want to keep the data as private as possible in any case.

That sounds reasonable at first inspection, but you have to wonder where the kid is who will notice that the emperor isn't wearing any clothes. Say you pay $360k for access to that - here are the trending topics as of a few minutes ago:

So... where is the value that can be monetized in any of that? Go ahead and follow the top one, and see if you can tell me where the value is, because I sure don't see it.

If you stay on Twitter, you'll notice that the top trending topics tend to be one of two things: celebrity gossip and nonsense. How anyone paying $360k to get access to a stream of stuff on that will find value is beyond me. It's great that Twitter has found a way to sell something - and it will keep working until the buyers come to their senses and realize that it has no value. Then again, most of the buyers are probably in PR and marketing, so that realization probably won't arrive...

Competing on Price

November 18, 2010 12:46:09.000

Kevin Hoctor talks about pricing for software (but the argument has value beyond software). It's specifically in the context of the new Mac App store, but I found this point interesting:

Because our software is worth the price I charge. I also owe it to my customer base to make sure my company is well-funded and continues to provide excellent software and support in the future. The profit curve is not negatively affected by higher prices until you are significantly out of the range of your competition—and by competition, I mean software that matches your software in quality. I've seen too many companies go out of business because they try to compete on price.

That's a point I made a lot while I was at Cincom, and to a large extent it's true - but it depends on where you've set that price. Note the middle section, which I'll repeat: "The profit curve is not negatively affected by higher prices until you are significantly out of the range of your competition"

The problem isn't competing on price; it's deciding on what the price should be without any input from reality. Ask any small vendor who has tried to keep prices up once a Walmart or Target showed up, for instance. You don't have to drop your prices in a constant race to the bottom - but you also can't stubbornly persist in pricing that is completely out of whack with what's going on in the marketplace.

To grow any business, you need to set pricing into what can broadly be called the "fair" range. If you find that there are always questions about your pricing, and that you need to come up with an entire sales spiel explaining your value relative to that pricing - then you have a problem. It's one thing to be Apple, where the prices are higher, but the perceived quality is also higher. It's something else again when only the pricing is higher.

Things That Make Me Go Hmmm

November 18, 2010 9:44:31.232

The Stuxnet worm seems to have been designed to attack Iran's nuclear efforts - now there are warnings that it could be easily modified to attack other systems for different purposes:

A malicious computer attack that appears to target Iran's nuclear plants can be modified to wreak havoc on industrial control systems around the world, and represents the most dire cyberthreat known to industry, government officials and experts said Wednesday. They warned that industries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the so-called Stuxnet worm as they merge networks and computer systems to increase efficiency. The growing danger, said lawmakers, makes it imperative that Congress move on legislation that would expand government controls and set requirements to make systems safer.

That's true of many worms though - Conficker comes to mind. Additionally, what's the most likely source of a worm that has a political purpose - it seems unlikely to me that the crime syndicate botnets would target that way - mostly they have commercial (i.e., making money) purposes. So ultimately, it makes me wonder about the nature of the disease, and the proposed cure....

Fallout New Vegas DLC

November 17, 2010 12:05:33.771

The first DLC for posted about running Fallout: New Vegas is coming (XBox Exclusive, at least at first) - and the description makes me wonder a bit:

As the victim of a raw deal you must work alongside three other captured wastelanders to recover the legendary treasure of the Sierra Madre Casino. In Dead Money, your life hangs in the balance as you face new terrain, foes, and choices.

This sounds more like the style of DLC that Dragon Age had - largely separate from the main game? Maybe I'm wrong about that, but that's how I read it. With the Fallout 3 DLC, which I only saw in the game of the year package, it all extended the base game - so if you came at it fresh, it was all just part of the game.

I hope I'm wrong about this, because I much prefer the integrated approach.

Smalltalk in London

November 17, 2010 8:46:26.788

Michael Lucas-Smith, Niall Ross, and Julian Fitzell will be doing a couple of interesting events in London next week. This is from an email update Julian sent out:

The monthly meeting of the UK Smalltalk User Group will be on Monday, November 22. Michael Lucas-Smith will be visiting us from the US and will be speaking about Xtreams. Martin Kobetic's presentation at ESUG only scratched the surface, apparently, and Michael intends to delve even deeper. He's also happy to answer questions about Cairo, WebVelocity and so on. Helge Nowak and Niall Ross are also going to be visiting us from out of town this month so it should be a great meeting. We'll be at the Counting House starting at 6:30pm. Details are here.
The day after that, on Tuesday, November 23, Cincom is running another Wolf Pack Programming event in conjunction with SPA and XTC. The workshop will run from 6:15pm to 9:30pm at the London offices of the BCS. We've been having a lot of fun testing the boundaries of Agile development with wolf packs all over Europe. If you're interested in attending, you can find out more and register here

Why I Don't Want an Electric Car

November 16, 2010 14:17:42.063

The key piece of the MSNBC write up on the Nissan Leaf for me is this:

Nissan says it can take as long as 20 hours to charge up the car using a standard 120-volt circuit. If you hook up to a 240-volt Level 2 charging station — which can be installed in your home for the estimated cost of $2,200 — you can cut that time down to eight hours or so for a full charge.

Mind you, I don't drive much. And once I start my new job (commuting by air to Dallas), I'll be driving my own car even less. Even with all that though, it just doesn't seem practical. I drive without air conditioning in the summer (my car's unit is broken), but - I'm not going to an office. If I were driving to work in this area, A/C would be an absolute necessity, unless I wanted to arrive soaked. Since running full bore A/C uses the same power that drives the car, that lessens range, and given the ridiculous recharge time (few people have a 240 volt outlet in their garage), it becomes even less practical.

The only way I can see this working is for the battery packs to get small enough that a "charge station" would swap your battery for a fully charged one, and charge you based on the power you received and the state of the battery you came in with. Otherwise, I can't see why I would buy something like the Leaf instead of a hybrid.

Paperwork

November 16, 2010 8:12:57.746

I've landed a new gig, which is good news. The slightly less good news is that it involves travel to a remote location (Dallas). There's an upside to that though; my sister, who I don't see very often, lives in that area. Also, I've been told that over time, I'll be able to do at least some of the work remotely. Given the state of my wife's knees (and the fact that my daughter will be heading to college next year), that will be important.

There are some funny aspects to the whole process of getting hired now. The last time I went through the whole interview/onboarding process was in 1993, when ParcPlace hired me. I came into Cincom via the acquisition of VisualWorks, so that process was pretty simple. Back in 1993, I recall there being very little paperworks. Sure, there was some, but it was pretty basic. Now? I'm not sure how many forms I've had to fill out, but it's a lot, and most of them seem to ask for variations on the same information. At least it's easier to get electronic copies of that stuff sent now; if it all had to go snail mail there's no telling how long the process might take :)

Recognizing Reality

November 16, 2010 6:02:09.382

Charles Miller sums up the whole "The Beatles are on iTunes" thing:

What's being proved today? It's two years since iTunes overtook Walmart as the number one music retailer in the USA, physical or digital. Apple, Amazon and their competitors don't need anybody to reassure them that they're "it", they know already. The Beatles signing up with iTunes might be a personal milestone for Steve Jobs, but outside Apple, even for a huge fan of the group such as myself, it's a bit meh.

I guess that leaves Prince as the sole major name relic out there....

Fallout NV Under Parallels Addendum

November 15, 2010 9:42:17.485

I posted about running Fallout: New Vegas in an XP VM under Parallels last week, and I wanted to add a brief addendum. When I first started playing, I got fairly frequent crashes. I thought that perhaps things would be more stable if I quit a few apps, and sure enough - the game runs nicely after that.

So it turns out that you can play FNV on a Mac using Parallels, but: if you only have 4 gb of memory (as I do) - go light on the Mac apps when you decide to play.

Smalltalks 2010 Wraps Up

November 14, 2010 8:35:12.440

Felipe Banados, one of the attendees of Smalltalks 2010, talks about the experience:

It has been quite a week. The experience of being at Smalltalks 2010 in Argentina was beyond any expectations I might have had. ¿The reason? It wasn’t only the keynotes, neither being in another country for the first time: It was because of meeting and feeling a part of the smalltalk community.

Sounds a lot like ESUG to me - and that's a good thing.
