The question is more than ok, but your discussion is from the wrong view:

You mention, that it is not difficult to learn Smalltalk - the other problems (e.g. domain specific) are more important. Well, if the other problems are more important - perhaps it would be better for those person to stay with their programming language - a programming language they are used to and they know how to express the things. Why learning a new language ? What are the benefits of learning this new language ?

James mentioned, that Smalltalk may not be chosen in several domains (e.g. games) - well, if a language is not suitable for that domain, you may ask yourself: what IS the domain, where Smalltalk is suitable for AND why is it not able for a specific domain ?

David mentioned several other programmers having different ideas about programming and they would not fit into a Smalltalk team. Well, why is a Smalltalk-team different from another language in this aspects ?

And yes: popularity is important. I've read a very interesting interview with the new blackberry boss here in Germany. He simply stated, that Apple did it right. Apple got the "private" side of the managers and then these managers wanted the iPhone technology also at work - even though Blackberry would perhaps a better suit at work.

And after all. Just answer the question: where is the domain, where the super-hyped library people are urgently waiting for to play with - in Smalltalk.

What are the answers for Smalltalk in the increasing Internet community ? Find these question and show demos with this technology.

Most of "small" answers come from the Squeak/Pharo community - the vendors are more or less out of the game. They have to satisfy their customers and have no time to make new innovation.

As David mention at the beginning of the talk: "... lot of companies are STILL using Smalltalk ..." - the "STILL" can be interpreted in lots of ways :-))

 <itunes:subtitle>IM 106: Practical GIT for Smalltalk</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Historically, Smalltalk has not been able to take advantage of standard revision control systems like git, svn, cvs, etc. Smalltalk developers and Smalltalk tools are focused on manipulating objects in the image and not on producing file-based artifacts. As a testament to this fact, Smalltalkers have resorted to inventing their own revision control systems and each Smalltalk dialect has their own flavor of revision control system. Leveraging the work of Max Leske, Camillo Bruni and Otto Behrens, I have begun a project based on Monticello and Metacello that is aimed at making it practical for developers to use git and github for managing and sharing their Smalltalk source code. In this talk I will share with you the details behind the project.</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:subtitle>IM 104: New Smalltalk Projects</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Over many years, new Smalltalk Projects were a big hope. Continue existing Smalltalk projects, keeping them alive, improving them, was reality. These existing Smalltalk projects have been so shining, so resistant against moving them away to other technologies that in 2011 the first new big project started. A senior manager in the software industry had the idea to significantly improve the customer experience, moving away from customer relationship. His idea was guidance. Guidance even is a totally new metaphor in human machine interaction, it preserves the free will of the user to run an interactions while not leaving her/him alone in the woods of arbitrary choices. This manager was looking for an appropriate technology to make his ideas become true. Looking around he found that Smalltalk was his choice. The story of this project will be the main topic of the presentation, but meanwhile this project is not alone. A new innovative startup contacted us and we got a request to port a Java application to Smalltalk in January 2012.</itunes:summary>

 <itunes:subtitle>IM 103: Continuous Integration</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Continuous integration is the practice where members of a development team integrate their work frequently. Usually each of them integrates at least daily, which leads to multiple integrations per day. To detect errors, each integration is verified by an automated build and test. This approach is generally found to lead to a significant reduction of integration problems, which in turn allows teams to develop cohesive software even in a limited time frame. In theory, tests should arrive within 15 minutes. However, in reality we find that this is not often the case. At MediaGenix NG there are 30 developers working on the same product, each of them building several new versions per day. For these new versions some 30.000 tests need to be run to check for errors. This makes it clear that theory and practice differ greatly. This presentation offers insights on a practical approach to continuous integration</itunes:summary>

I often find that profiling tools often don't point me to the performance problems in my code. I find myself frequently doing the "manual instrumentation" that David describes in the podcast. Nice interesting thoughts in this podcast.

Hi guys,

Just a comment about Aida/Web presumably not supported on Squeak: Aida is always released on VW and Squeak/Pharo. Aida is designed and developed all the time with portability in mind. To all Smalltalks, not just for that or another camp. We'd like that Smalltalkers as such a small community unite, not divide ourselves!

In last year or two Aida is always ported and tested on Pharo first. It is true that previous version of Aida was ported but not tested on Squeak, because previous Pharo ports worked on Squeak automatically. Yet on latest Squeak 4.2 not which we discovered in a squeak.org upgrading week Chris Cunningham mentioned in above interview. But this small glitch doesn't mean Squeak is not supported at all! Contrary, even that I admit I didn't have much time in a week we agreed to work together on website upgrade, a patched Aida was provided in few days and announced on the list Chris followed as well. So Chris, if you lost interest on migrating squeak.org so fast, you should at least be honest and don't spread false information around. An information you should know it is not true.

<itunes:summary>Programming environments have tremendously evolved over the last decade. However, this evolution is not uniform. The range of tools available to analyze the execution is still limited and based on a fixed and static representation of source code. As a consequence, applications are profiled along their static structure, in terms of methods and classes, instead of the real elements that made up a computation: objects and messages. Code execution profiling is a weak point of most programming languages and environment. In this presentation, we will present and demonstrate state-of-the-Art profilers, which output sexy graphical representations of code execution and test coverage. These profilers have been successfully used in numerous large projects.</itunes:summary>
