Today's Smalltalk 4 You looks at the Process Monitor in Cincom Smalltalk. It makes it pretty easy to track down green threads that you've let get away from you. If you have trouble viewing it here in the browser, you can also navigate directly to YouTube. To watch now, click on the image below:
If you have trouble viewing that directly, you can click here to download the video directly. If you need the video in a Windows Media format, then download that here.

Today's Smalltalk 4 You looks at a simple debug extension for VisualWorks - the addition of #out to any object, making it simpler to write to the Transcript ObjectStudio has always supported that mechanism. Time for me to learn something new, and in the process, maybe convey a bit of knowledge. I've started looking into Python, and I'll be publishing some screencasts on the subject. I'm running a bit ahead in terms of recorded content at the moment, so look for the first screencasts to appear in about 2 weeks.

law
August 29, 2013 11:27:12.059
New Zealand just banned software patents (as such - there are some loopholes):
The relevant clause of the patent bill actually states that a computer program is "not an invention." Some have suggested that was a way to get around the wording of the TRIPS intellectual property treaty, which requires patents to be "available for any inventions, whether products or processes, in all fields of technology."
Now, if only we could get DC to find this much of a clue....

copyright

Well, this has to be the best example I've seen lately as to why copyright law is so utterly absurd:
Yesterday, August 28th, 2013, marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I Have a Dream”. If you live in the US, you’ve probably heard of this speech. You’ve also probably never read it, heard the audio, or seen the video in its entirety. Unfortunately, the speech is under copyright, and will remain so until 2083. As a result, it is illegal to republish under most circumstances.
We are well past the point where copyright law does anything beyond empowering rent seekers.
