Because USB is Hard, or Something

September 2, 2013 16:25:52.263

Are there any balls that Microsoft can't drop?

The Xbox One won't support external storage solutions when the console launches later this year, Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb confirmed during a live recording of his podcast at PAX Prime 2013. Responding to a question from an audience member, Hryb explained that the company plans to allow Xbox One users to utilize external hard drives if they need more space than the console's internal 500 GB hard drive allows. However, he didn't think that feature would be available at launch.

Copyright Considered Harmful

August 29, 2013 18:20:16.000

Well, this has to be the best example I've seen lately as to why copyright law is so utterly absurd:

Yesterday, August 28th, 2013, marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I Have a Dream”. If you live in the US, you’ve probably heard of this speech. You’ve also probably never read it, heard the audio, or seen the video in its entirety. Unfortunately, the speech is under copyright, and will remain so until 2083. As a result, it is illegal to republish under most circumstances.

We are well past the point where copyright law does anything beyond empowering rent seekers.

law

Now, the Rest of the Planet

August 29, 2013 11:27:12.059

New Zealand just banned software patents (as such - there are some loopholes):

The relevant clause of the patent bill actually states that a computer program is "not an invention." Some have suggested that was a way to get around the wording of the TRIPS intellectual property treaty, which requires patents to be "available for any inventions, whether products or processes, in all fields of technology."

Now, if only we could get DC to find this much of a clue....

Coming Soon: Python Screencasts

August 27, 2013 13:52:44.171

Time for me to learn something new, and in the process, maybe convey a bit of knowledge. I've started looking into Python, and I'll be publishing some screencasts on the subject. I'm running a bit ahead in terms of recorded content at the moment, so look for the first screencasts to appear in about 2 weeks.
