Thu'umcast Episode 14: Hail Thu'umcast on Facebook! (AAC)

December 28, 2011 23:54:57.341

Thu'umcast

Welcome to episode 14 of "Thu'umcast" - a podcast where Michael Lucas-Smith, Scott Dirk, Austin Haley, Makahlua and I document our trials and tribulations in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Today we cover some of the great feedback we've gotten via the Facebook group - so we want to thank everyone who's contributed, because this is your episode!

If you liked our work on That Podcast, you'll probably like this. We intend to stay with the same idea - a gameplay podcast. If you don't want spoilers, don't listen - we are going to be talking about how we play the game, and what we ran across as we played.

You can subscribe in iTunes (or any podcatcher) using this feed, or this one for the AAC edition. We'll add the iTunes specific links as soon as they are available. In the meantime, join the Facebook Group and follow us on Twitter. If you play on Steam, join the Steam Group. Like the music? Pay Sbeast a visit, we thank him for letting us use it!

Links to all episodes and other information can be found on the Thu'umcast page.

If you want to download the podcast directly, we've provided it in three formats:

Got feedback? Tweet us!. Enjoy the podcast, and we'll see you in Skyrim!

ST 4U 174: Cloning an ENVY Repository

December 28, 2011 10:56:53.735

Today's Smalltalk 4 You covers cloning a full ENVY repository. If you have trouble viewing it here in the browser, you can also navigate directly to YouTube. To watch now, click on the image below:

Cloning an ENVY Repository.

If you have trouble viewing that directly, you can click here to download the video directly. If you need the video in a Windows Media format, then download that here.

You can also watch it on YouTube:

Today we'll look at how you clone an existing VA Smalltalk ENvy repository - i.e., make a full copy of it. To start, go to the System menu in the launcher and select Change User - you'll need to become Library Supervisor to do this:

Change User

Change User

Now, pull down the System menu again, and select Clone Library:

Clone

You'll be prompted for a server address. If you have an ENVY server setup, use that - we'll be using File I/O, so we'll leave it blank:

Repository Address

Next we'll get prompted for the file and directory to use. Do not select the current repository!

Repository Name

This may take awhile, depending on how large your repository is. Select 16GB as the size when prompted, and let it run. When it completes, you'll see a message in the Transcript. To show that it's a full clone, let's reconnect to the new repository:

Change Library

The system will chug for a bit, and then show you that everything is fine:

Changed Repository

At this point, you can browse your published apps and config maps to prove things to yourself. You now have a clean repository that you could hand off to another VA Smalltalk user.

Need more help? There's a screencast for other topics like this which you may want to watch. Questions? Try the "Chat with James" Google gadget over in the sidebar.

Epic Fail

December 28, 2011 2:20:41.536

This thread over on Penny Arcade is about as close to a "how not to do marketing" tutorial as you'll ever get. Here's my question: how does a guy (the Ocean Marketing guy, to be clear) end up in a public facing position when it's so obvious that he has no people skills?

Thank You Thu'umcast Listeners!

December 26, 2011 2:19:00.515

We are very pleased to see this in the "Games and Hobbies" section of iTunes:

Thanks to everyone who subscribes! In answer to a question on our Facebook group, you can subscribe using:

To subscribe in iTunes without using the feed from the iTunes podcast section, just pull down the "Advanced" menu, and use the "Subscribe to Podcast..." option. While we don't have a feed for OGG files, each post contains a link to that format - and if you check the Thu'umcast Page, you'll find all of those download links. Thanks Again!

ST 4U 173: VA Asist Pro

December 21, 2011 12:51:23.137

Today's Smalltalk 4 You looks at some of the features that VA Assist Pro brings to VA Smalltalk. If you have trouble viewing it here in the browser, you can also navigate directly to YouTube. To watch now, click on the image below:

VA Assist Pro.

If you have trouble viewing that directly, you can click here to download the video directly. If you need the video in a Windows Media format, then download that here.

You can also watch it on YouTube:

Today we'll look at some of the tool support that's now part of the standard VA Smalltalk image from VA Assist Pro - something that used to be an add on. To demonstrate, we've created a small application with one simple class, Person:

Person Class

First, select the class in the browser, use the context menu, and take note of the VA Assist Pro pull right. Go into that, and try All Instances>>inspect:

inspect instances

Since we haven't created any, you should not find any. Next, try the Hard Coded Strings check against the class:

hard coded

We've hard coded the first and last names in the initialize method, and that's what turns up:

hard coded

This can be a really useful way to find "magic" data that's been added to your application. Next, let's spell check the class. We've added an instance variable named phones to show what this check does not do:

spell check

As you can see below, what it actually finds are references to messages that are not in the image (note the red in the browser pane):

spell check

After creating an instance in a workspace, let's look for all instances again:

all instances

all instances

As you can see above, there's an inspector on the one instance now. Another handy (but dangerous) option is niling out all instances. In the first of the two images above, note the become nil option. Selecting that gives you this warning:

become nil

That can be useful in testing, but as the system tells you, it's dangerous. Use it with care. There are a few more options in the VA Assist Pro menus, and many of them scale across applications, not just a single class - take some time to explore.

Need more help? There's a screencast for other topics like this which you may want to watch. Questions? Try the "Chat with James" Google gadget over in the sidebar.

Renaming is Dangerous

December 21, 2011 11:21:07.562

The rename of SqueakDBX to DBXTalk has run into a few interesting landmines:

Thanks for the tip. I was aware of the rename to DBXTalk, but not the change to ConfigurationOfOpenDBXDriver. The new site says "Welcome to SqueakDBX", and refers only to ConfigurationOfSqueakDBX. Further offtopic but perhaps of interest to others... The DBXTalk site was difficult to find. For me google results only show it on the second page. I lament for your sake the loss of the squeakdbx.org domain. You may have had better better results holding on to it for a couple of years coupled with a 301 redirect. As well as losing the immediate redirects from the existing links on other web sites, including your own, the cybersquatter now on squeakdbx.org may compromise the ranking of your new site, along with additional "content duplication/spam" reasons discussed here.

In internet terms, it pays to give the initial naming some thought - because changing it has its own issues.
