Newegg Kills a Patent Troll

January 29, 2013 14:53:25.896

It's good that Newegg - unlike so many other companies - fought this battle and shutdown an egregious troll. On the other hand, how many small companies do you think actually have the dollars to fight such battles? Before you go on automatic and keep believing that patents (particularly software patents) are useful, ask yourself - are they actually helping anyone other than the worst lawyers and trolls?

My Admiration for Valve Just Took a Hit

January 27, 2013 10:36:35.869

I've been using Steam to play Mac and Windows games for a few years now - I've never really had any issues. This morning, on the Mac, Steam needed to update. I went ahead and let it do that, and suddenly I saw this when Steam restarted:

Seriously? I started googling, and sure enough - Valve has a forum page with this pithy advice:

If you wish to use Steam please make sure of the following:
Steam is installed on a case-insensitive partition or hard drive
Your User folder is installed on a case-insensitive partition or hard drive

I can't wait to see how well that stupid idea plays out on Linux. Sure, there's a work around - you create a disk image, mount it as a volume, and throw all of your Steam stuff in it. Then add a tons of symlinks to make it all look normal. I'm sure the casual Mac gamer will rush out to do that. Hey, Gabe Newell - the 80's called. They want case insensitive file systems back.

Today we'll take a look at some additional memory monitoring tools you can use in VA Smalltalk. First, visit the goodies page on the Instantiations website:

Goodies

Scroll down and select the "Smalltalk Memory Analysis Tools" zip file. Download that, extract it, and import the dat file into Envy. Once you've down that, open up the Editions Tool, and load KesMemoryTools (which will load KesMemoryUsage)

Memory Tools

Open up the tools menu in the launcher - you should see a new entry. Open up the monitor, and you can see which objects are consuming memory:

Memory Usage

Run part of your app, and you should see how many of your own objects are being created. This can be a handy thing when you want to know whether you are getting more of an object than you think you should be getting

Need more help? There's a screencast for other topics like this which you may want to watch. Questions? Try the "Chat with James" Google gadget over in the sidebar.
