Redline Smalltalk
The Redline Smalltalk project - running Smalltalk on the JVM - seems to be moving forward. There's:
- A Website
- A Blog
- And a Twitter Feed that brings up an Eclipse plugin

Have you lined this Mr Ladd of Redline up for an independent misinterpretations interview yet? :-)
No doubt there are still tricky issues (non local returns?) BUT surely the InvokeDynamic bytecode, and general work supporting dyanmic languages is going to make this approach a serious option.
For what it's worth, ThoughtWorks seem to be pretty bullish about JRuby, and it isn't too big a step from JRuby to Redline and its ilk.

btw: if you do interview with the guy, please ask him this thoughts on Smalltalk and "the parallel revolution".
