Good News: A-Rod Benched for Game 5
As good as A-Rod is in the regular season, he's awful in the post - he's never been able to come up with the clutch hits in playoff games. So this news - Girardi benching him for game 5 - is good stuff.

Minor League Football?
The USFL is back, and it looks like they intend to run it as a minor league. Maybe if it takes off, colleges could get away from football and back to, you know, academics....
Shades of 1978
I remember that year - in August, the Yankees were 14.5 games out, and the season looked like it was over. One amazing month and a one game playoff later, and the red Sox were down.
Now:
The Rays' win came four minutes after Boston blew a one-run lead in the ninth at Baltimore and lost 4-3. The Red Sox, who held a nine-game lead over the Rays in early September, and Tampa Bay began the final day of the regular season tied for the wild card.
The Sox blew a late game lead tonight, and the Rays came back from 7 down (sadly, against the Yankees). However, I'm happy to be back to normality, where the Red Sox choke at the end of the season, and the Yankees win the pennant :)

It's a Business
Mariano Rivera admitted the unthinkable had been a possibility. — The Boston Red Sox offered him a chance to turn in his pinstripes and switch sides in baseball's fiercest rivalry. — “It was real.
I follow baseball pretty closely, and I'm a big Yankees fan - but this is one of those periodic reminders that it's primarily a business, not something put out there for the sole enjoyment of the fans. When that fourth wall breaks (think Babe Ruth going to the Yankees, or his late career away from the Yankees), it makes that all the more obvious.
Best Trick Play Ever
This is the sort of thing that only works once, but boy - it's an amazing football play:
Yankees Shake Up Management
This might be a good start, but it won't solve the problem:
In the wake of the disappointing end to New York's season, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has fired pitching coach Dave Eiland.
Here's a better answer: Hire a 400 pound, ex-NFL guy as the bench coach. When Girardi indicates that he's about to make a pitching change, have the 400 pound guy sit on him for 5 minutes. Given Girardi's constant - and mostly stupid - pitching moves - that woiuld help a lot.
Sweep!
The Yankees just took the Twins apart this year -tonight's final score was 6-1. If Giradi weren't obsessed with pitch count, it likely would have been a shutout. Hughes was mowing batters down, but when he hit that "magic number" - out he came, and the next guy loaded the bases. |
It's not that pitch count is irrelevant; it's just that it's only one factor, not the only one. If your pitcher is cruising, here's a hot tip: leave him in. If all you're going to do is go on auto-pilot with pitch count, you might as well put a laptop with a webcam in charge.
