Civ V?

June 13, 2011 19:21:16.360

I've been hearing nothing but negativity about Civilization V since it came out - so last night, when my daughter sounded interested in it, I couldn't muster any enthusiasm. On the other hand, I haven't seen it myself so - she created a Steam account and downloaded the Mac version. So far, she likes it a lot. Maybe I'll give it a try, so we could play multi-player....

I just started play Civ V about two weeks ago myself. It is different from previous Civ's. I would say it is closest to Civ III.

Warfare is definitely in the style of hex-map war games from Avalon Hill what with the limited stacking, terrain blocking movement, and ranged attack units.

Some things are really annoying such as National Wonders requiring a certain building being built in all cities before the Wonder. You can't expand because as soon as you found a new city the National Wonder aborts construction since you now no longer have the required building in each city.

I'm also not sure if I like the new system of policies. Policies replace the government types of previous Civ's You also spend culture to adopt policies instead of gaining types through tech research. This culture spending method seems slow. I would say this policy feature reminds me somewhat of Alpha Centauri's system.

The game does look great, if you have a good system. Due to the way roads/railroads work, you don't have to connect all the tiles and get the bad looking mess. I do like that cities are now no longer limited working the "X" group of tiles and cities can buy tiles to expand.

It does seem a little slow in spots, but overall I'm liking it.
