The Wages of Traffic Calming

February 17, 2010 10:14:05.753

It's been a week since the second storm, and 11 days since the first - but because the brilliant thinkers in Howard County traffic control think that the "random shapes in the road" approach to slowing traffic is a good idea, we have this to put up with:

Many of us in the neighborhood have been wondering how plows would deal with those areas after a major snow storm for years; this year, we discovered that the answer is mostly "they don't". That was pretty clear to everyone but the advanced thinkers in the local government. I rather suspect that none of the traffic design folks have atrocities like this near them...

I generally don't like traffic-calming measures myself, but I really don't see the inconvenience vis-a-vis the snow in this picture. It looks bad having that pile in the middle of the road, but it seems driveable.

Keep in mind that this is over a week since the last snowfall. That pile of snow in the middle is drivable now, but it's been melting down - it was a complete mess for 2-3 days after the snowstorm, when the rest of the road, while narrow, was clear.

You mean to say that you are not APPRECIATIVE of the efforts of the all-knowing, benevolent people in government, who know what's good for you so much better than you do?

what's the problem? Even when looking at your former pictures with and without snow. Don't you have steering wheels in your cars?

Umm, I don't care how good a driver you are - if you get 50 (plus) inches of snow in a week in an area accustomed to less than 12 in a whole season, throw in roads narrowed by traffic calming such that plows don't fit, you end up with trouble.
